ATHLETE'S TESTIMONIALS
Following my retirement from competing in GAA and soccer and after searching for a new challenge in sport I started competing in athletics in 2014 mainly running. In September 2014 I started swimming lessons with a view to competing in triathlon and in particular Ironman events. Owen has been coaching me from Jan 2017 and during this period I have made massive gains in all the triathlon disciplines. Swimming has been my Achilles heel in triathlon and I had plateaued at 2:00-2:05 minutes per 100 meters in the two years previous to being coached by Owen and that was with the use of core shorts. Owen got me to ditch the core shorts and initially I have to admit I did find it very tough. My swim times fell back to 2:10- 2:15 minutes for 100 meters but Owen encouraged me to persevere with his plan and after just five months under his guidance I'm now swimming 100 meters in 01:44 per 100 meters without any aids. My long swim pace is now 01:55-2:00 minutes per 100 meters, a pace that I never thought possible for me to achieve. My strongest disciplines in triathlon are Biking and running. Under Owens guidance and in the short period I have worked with him I have made huge gains in both Biking and running. I am now running much stronger off the bike and I have achieved top 10 finishes in all the races I have competed in so far this season. Owen has also helped me with my diet and training/race nutrition allowing me to remain more energetic and stronger both in racing and training. All in all I highly recommend Owen as a coach to pursue your goals in triathlon/multi sport, he is very encouraging and easy to get along with as well as being a total professional. I look forward to working with Owen in pursuit of my triathlon goals into the future. What this guy doesn't know about triathlon/multi-sport isn't worth knowing.
I went with Owen as a coach firstly because of his reputation as an athlete. His triathlon results are so impressive it's obvious he knows how to get the most out of his body. Since signing up with Owen my own fitness has reached another level culminating with two 70.3 world championship qualifications and an ironman pb of 9.35. I love the regular contact and daily interaction as he watches how you react to different sessions and tweaks following days to suit. Highly recommended.
I have had the privilege of training with Owen over the last 2 years. This is my third season and is shaping up to be my best. I came to the sport after many years of football. After getting a little old for team sports, I moved to running, then a little cycling and eventually into triathlon. After completing several sprints & a few Olympic distance events I decided to enter a 70.3. I managed to complete it in 5:51, but it was a struggle. Around that point I decided to enter a Full. I realized I need a coach. I went to Owen with a goal of completing a Full in 12 hours. With only 3.5 months training, Owen got me over the line in 12:01. This included stomach issues on the run. Season two with Owen brought massive improvements. Two 70.3 events in under 5hrs. And a further 2 in under 5:08. My second Full Ironman brought even greater gains. Finish time 10:10 and top 20 in age group, with a top 5 run split and top 7 bike split ( Age group). Roll on season 3. Results are one thing but knowledge is another. Owens advice and guidance from, nutrition to equipment is exceptional. His race knowledge is invaluable. As he says, “he has been there and done that”. To be able to call on his knowledge and experience without having to make the mistakes myself have saved me days in training and hours racing. I lead a busy life with a young family and rapidly growing business that consumes big chunks of my time. To have a coach that produces a bespoke training schedule that exactly suits my needs and requirements is invaluable. I love the fact that I can open my phone and everything is planned and detailed for me. Owen monitors my progress and guides me in everything from training to recovery. He quickly picks up on any issues with my training and understands the external pressures of life that can affect my training. But most of all he understands me. He knows that I am don’t need a coach who is in my ear every day, but he is there with a gentle push when required. He points out my mistakes, but rarely chastises me. He gives me great confidence in my ability and my ability to achieve. Owen trains the body to achieve, but probably more importantly the mind to believe.
I approached Owen in September 2015 for Triathlon coaching having known him primarily through reputation as a formidable Ironman athlete. I wanted to build upon my first two years in the sport and to ensure that I continued to progress. Owen built and guided me through a training programme which ensured that I was in the best shape of my life for my goal races. In the 2016 season alone I achieved success with a podium at a National Series Race; a time trial personal best for 10 miles; personal bests in swim and run at Olympic distance; a 4hr 20 70.3 race, and completed my first Ironman. Aside from results; I can honestly say that I am a stronger and better triathlete for the coaching I have received from Owen and I am confident that I can continue my progress under Owen’s guidance. I have found Owen to be approachable, knowledgeable, and patient at all times. He has an infectious enthusiasm for triathlon, hard work, and pushing your limits. Above all else; Owen has a genuine interest in the success of his athletes along with the experience and knowledge necessary to ensure that success. I have picked Owen’s brains about countless triathlon related subjects; from clothing and equipment choices to nutrition, pacing and pre-race nerves – he has never failed to have a thoughtful and considered response to the questions I have asked. Owen has a wealth of experience and knowledge, and more importantly – he has the modesty and temperament to ensure that he communicates this to his athletes. I would have no hesitation in recommending Owen as a coach.

Working with Owen Martin took my performance to an entirely new level, I only thought I knew what I was doing beforehand when in fact I have learned so much more than I imagined. I initially started working with Owen when I found out I had qualified to represent Ireland as an age group athlete, my goal was to be in the best shape I had ever been in come race day. He has helped me achieve my goals and so much more, from PRs to podiums, and rebuilt me as a better athlete from top to bottom, training to nutrition to recovery to mental toughness. I’ve never known an individual so dedicated and it absolutely shows in his tireless efforts to educate and improve everyone he coaches. He truly knows how to bring out the best in his athletes!” Owen always finds ways to challenge me in workouts and gives great (and extremely timely) feedback and advice. I attribute this to how serious Owen takes his coaching profession. I would highly recommend Owen Martin as a coach! - Andy Harrington, Monaghan, Ireland
I went to Owen Martin after completing 4 IM distances races. I felt I was in a bit of a rut with my training and needed a change. I wanted to take it to the next level. I had one goal in mind for 2016 and it was to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, a big ask, I know! Owen being a neighbour of mine, I knew he had qualified quite a few times for Kona so I knew he knew what it takes to get there and to get me there. With Owen’s coaching, in 7 months he took me from a IM finisher to an IM top age grouper competitor, finishing 11th in my ag and 40th overall in IM UK and 3rd in my ag in IM Malaysia and 28th over all and achieving my goal Ironman Kona qualification!!! Onwards and upwards to Kona 2017.
After qualifying and competing as a self coached athlete in Kona 2014 I went into “more is better’ mode as I was surprised at performing quite well there. However I lost objectivity completely and went from one incident of minor injury to recurrent periods of illness prior to each key event over the next two years. A brush with Kidney failure post Ironman Arizona brought me to the point of either I should stop or make big changes to my training. My background in Sports medicine meant I thought I would be pretty much uncoachable but having met Owen in Kona and kept in touch I started with him as coach post Ironman Arizona in 2016. Subsequently I’ve made great strides with my swim/bike /run numbers returning to or exceeding my pre 2014 scores and planned load and recovery protocols meaning I have not been sick or injured since starting. I’m back really enjoying training and ready to compete in key events this year.
As a coach Owen has it all and is willing to give it all. His knowledge and experience in the sport of triathlon are second to none. Be prepared to work for your success but be aware that Owen will be by your side each step of the way. He doesn't let you away with much!!. He is a top class athlete and a top class coach. Before I joined OM coaching I was training in only the disciplines I enjoy - swimming and running. I only took out the bike when I really really had to. Now I have grown to like the bike, this is all to do with Owen's knowledge of me and tailoring the sessions to suit - that and some persistence. Another thing that I find works for me is that TP is uploaded each week so if I am having a bad week or doing a bit of slacking I'll get a text to see what's up. OM never takes his eye off the ball. The proof is in the pudding (or those much anticipated and everlasting internet results) my swim bike run has improved immensely and I look forward to seeing what the next few years bring.
